What E23 actually means
The fridge freezer tried to join your home Wi-Fi, could not get a connection, and has given up trying.
On this Grundig model the E23 code is a network fault, not a cooling or mechanical one. The appliance made repeated attempts to link to your router, failed, and has stopped attempting rather than keep retrying in the background. Cooling, defrost and the fans are unaffected, so the food side of the appliance carries on exactly as normal — you lose the app and remote features until it connects.
What E23 looks like on a Grundig fridge freezer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Grundig fridge freezer, E23 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Not cooling
- Freezer not freezing
- Ice building up at the back
- Food going off in the fridge
- Running constantly and never getting cold
- E23 flashing on the display
- Beeping and showing E23
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- Wrong Wi-Fi password entered during setup
- Router too far from the appliance, or a thick wall in between
- Home broadband was down or the router was restarting during the pairing attempt
- Router settings the appliance cannot work with (for example a guest or captive-login network)
- Pairing mode timed out before the appliance finished connecting
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Check your broadband is working on a phone stood next to the fridge freezer — if the signal is weak there, that is your answer
- Restart your router, wait for it to come fully back up, then start the appliance's Wi-Fi setup again
- Re-enter the Wi-Fi password carefully; it is case sensitive
- Switch the appliance off at the wall for a minute, switch it back on and retry the connection so it starts fresh instead of remembering the failed attempt
- If a family member has changed the router password or replaced the router, expect to pair the appliance again from scratch
Which Grundig models show E23
E23 means the same thing on this model. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
