What E24 actually means

The fan that circulates cold air around the fridge section isn't running as the control board expects, so the appliance has flagged a fan fault.

On this Grundig fridge freezer the fresh food compartment has its own fan pushing chilled air around the shelves. The control board watches that fan's feedback signal, and when it doesn't get the speed it asked for — fan stalled, blocked, or not reporting back — it logs E24. The compressor usually keeps running, so the freezer often stays cold while the fridge side drifts warm or cools very unevenly, which is why people notice milk going off before they notice the code.

What E24 looks like on a Grundig fridge freezer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Grundig fridge freezer, E24 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Fridge freezer not draining
  • Water left in the machine at the end of the cycle
  • Stops mid-cycle full of water
  • Standing water in the bottom
  • Machine not turning
  • Won't spin
  • Hums or buzzes but nothing moves
  • Turns one way only

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Fridge fan blocked by ice build-up around the fan housing or air duct
  • Food packaging or a bag pushed against the air outlet at the back of the fridge
  • Worn or seized fan motor
  • Loose or damaged wiring to the fan, or a fault on the control board

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Look at the vents and air outlets inside the fridge compartment and move any packaging, boxes or bags that are pressed against them.
  2. Check the fridge isn't packed so tightly that air can't move around the shelves.
  3. Make sure both doors are closing fully and the seals aren't folded over or trapped on a shelf edge or drawer — warm air getting in is what causes the ice build-up behind the fan in the first place.
  4. If you can see frost or ice built up around the vents at the back of the fridge, empty the appliance, switch it off at the wall and let it defrost fully with the doors open before switching back on.
  5. Turn it off at the wall for a minute and back on — if the fan was momentarily stalled and has freed itself, the code can clear.

Which Grundig models show E24

E24 means the same thing on this model. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
