What E21 actually means

The fridge section has been too warm for too long, and the appliance is warning you that the food inside may have spoiled.

Grundig's control board watches the fresh food compartment sensor and raises a high temperature alarm once that sensor reads above 15°C continuously for an hour. Worth knowing: on this model the alarm doesn't usually appear as the text "E21" at all — the display shows the highest temperature the fridge reached, in degrees, which is Grundig's way of telling you how bad it got. The clock resets as soon as the compartment cools back down, so the alarm is a record of what happened rather than a fault that stops the appliance working.

What E21 looks like on a Grundig fridge freezer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Grundig fridge freezer, E21 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Fridge freezer door won't open
  • Door won't lock or click shut
  • Door lock light flashing
  • Door stuck shut with the load inside
  • Won't start even with the door closed
  • Not cooling
  • Freezer not freezing
  • Ice building up at the back

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Fridge door left open or not fully closed, often by a shelf item or a drawer sticking out
  • A power cut while you were out, so the appliance stopped cooling for a while
  • A large load of warm shopping put in at once
  • Perished or distorted door seal letting warm air in
  • Blocked air vents inside the compartment stopping cold air circulating
  • A genuine cooling fault — fan, sensor or refrigeration problem — if the fridge is still not getting cold

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Check the door shuts fully and the seal sits flat all the way round with nothing trapped in it
  2. Make sure nothing is pushed up against the air vents inside the fridge compartment
  3. Think about whether there has been a recent power cut, or the door was left ajar — that alone explains most of these alarms
  4. Switch off at the wall for a minute, then back on, and see whether the fridge cools normally over the next few hours
  5. Check the appliance isn't hard against a wall or in an unusually hot spot, which makes it struggle in warm weather

Which Grundig models show E21

E21 means the same thing on this model. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.

Common questions about Grundig E21

What does E21 mean on a Grundig fridge freezer?

The fridge section has been too warm for too long, and the appliance is warning you that the food inside may have spoiled.

Can I fix Grundig E21 myself?

There are 5 checks you can safely do yourself first.

  1. Check the door shuts fully and the seal sits flat all the way round with nothing trapped in it.
  2. Make sure nothing is pushed up against the air vents inside the fridge compartment.
  3. Think about whether there has been a recent power cut, or the door was left ajar — that alone explains most of these alarms.
  4. Switch off at the wall for a minute, then back on, and see whether the fridge cools normally over the next few hours.
  5. Check the appliance isn't hard against a wall or in an unusually hot spot, which makes it struggle in warm weather.

This sometimes clears with those checks. If it comes back, it needs looking at properly.
