What E17 actually means
The fridge freezer has detected that one of its internal air-circulation fans — the flap fan, which pushes cold air through the air channel into the compartment — isn't turning as it should.
On this model E17 is a flap fan fault. The control board watches the fan's feedback signal, and when the fan doesn't run or doesn't reach the speed expected, it flags the error rather than carrying on and letting the compartment drift warm. Cooling from the compressor may continue, but the cold air isn't being distributed properly, so you'll often notice one section warming up or icing over unevenly while the display shows the code.
What E17 looks like on a Grundig fridge freezer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Grundig fridge freezer, E17 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Fridge freezer door won't open
- Door won't lock or click shut
- Door lock light flashing
- Door stuck shut with the load inside
- Won't start even with the door closed
- Fridge freezer not draining
- Water left in the machine at the end of the cycle
- Stops mid-cycle full of water
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- Ice or frost built up around the fan blade, stopping it turning — by far the most common finding
- Fan motor worn out or seized
- A loose or corroded connection to the fan
- Air vents blocked by overpacked food or packaging pressed against the back wall
- Control board no longer reading the fan's speed signal correctly
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the appliance off at the wall for a minute, then back on — if the fault was a momentary reading it may clear
- Check the door is closing fully and the seal isn't folded or sticky; a door slightly ajar is the usual reason ice forms around a fan in the first place
- Move food away from the rear vents and don't pack items tight against the back wall
- If you can see heavy frost inside, empty the appliance and let it defrost fully with the door open, then restart it — if the code stays away, ice was the cause
- Keep an eye on food temperatures until it's sorted
Which Grundig models show E17
E17 means the same thing on this model. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.

Can I fix Grundig E17 myself?
There are 5 checks you can safely do yourself first.
- Turn the appliance off at the wall for a minute, then back on — if the fault was a momentary reading it may clear.
- Check the door is closing fully and the seal isn't folded or sticky; a door slightly ajar is the usual reason ice forms around a fan in the first place.

- If you can see heavy frost inside, empty the appliance and let it defrost fully with the door open, then restart it — if the code stays away, ice was the cause.
- Keep an eye on food temperatures until it's sorted.

Tried the checks and it's still showing E17?
This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. Then it wants someone who can open it up.
What it costs, before you call: the price is the same whatever the fault turns out to be — £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it, or £84 in total including VAT if it is put right on the visit and no parts are needed.
