What E14 actually means
The fridge freezer has lost the signal from one of its internal cooling fans — on this model the control board is reporting a fault with the JKR compartment fan, not the freezer or fridge fan.
The fault for this appliance lists a separate code for each fan: the freezer fan, the condenser fan, the fridge fan and the JKR compartment fan. E14 is the JKR one, so the board is either seeing no feedback from that fan or seeing it run outside the speed it expects. Because that fan is what pushes chilled air into the compartment, the section it serves will gradually warm up while the rest of the appliance may still feel cold, which is why people often think nothing is wrong.
What E14 looks like on a Grundig fridge freezer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Grundig fridge freezer, E14 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Fridge freezer door won't open
- Door won't lock or click shut
- Door lock light flashing
- Door stuck shut with the load inside
- Won't start even with the door closed
- Fridge freezer not draining
- Water left in the machine at the end of the cycle
- Stops mid-cycle full of water
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- The fan blade jammed by a build-up of ice around the housing
- Food packaging or a bag pressed against the internal air vent, stalling the blade
- Worn fan motor or failed bearing, so the fan no longer reaches the speed the board expects
- A broken or chafed wiring connection between the fan and the control board
- Control board fault falsely reporting a fan that is actually running
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Take a look inside and move any packets, bags or boxes away from the internal air vents and grilles — an over-packed shelf in front of the outlet is a common cause
- Check for visible frost or ice around the vent area; if there is a heavy build-up, emptying the appliance and letting it defrost fully with the door open often clears a stalled fan
- Switch off at the wall for a minute, then power back up — if the fan frees itself the code may not return
- Make sure the doors are closing properly and the seals are not being held open by an over-full shelf, as warm damp air getting in is what causes the icing in the first place
Which Grundig models show E14
E14 means the same thing on this model. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.

Can I fix Grundig E14 myself?
There are 4 checks you can safely do yourself first.
- Take a look inside and move any packets, bags or boxes away from the internal air vents and grilles — an over-packed shelf in front of the outlet is a common cause.
- Check for visible frost or ice around the vent area; if there is a heavy build-up, emptying the appliance and letting it defrost fully with the door open often clears a stalled fan.
- Switch off at the wall for a minute, then power back up — if the fan frees itself the code may not return.

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried them.
How much does it cost to repair Grundig E14?
£66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it, or £84 in total including VAT if it is put right on the visit and no parts are needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.
Tried the checks and it's still showing E14?
This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. Then it wants someone who can open it up.
What it costs, before you call: the price is the same whatever the fault turns out to be — £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it, or £84 in total including VAT if it is put right on the visit and no parts are needed. Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
