What E13 actually means

The fan that pushes cold air around the freezer isn't turning at the speed the control board expects, so the appliance has flagged it up.

Inside the freezer, behind the back wall, a fan blows air over the cold evaporator coil and circulates it through the compartment. The control board monitors that fan's speed, and when it doesn't get the signal it expects — fan stalled, running slowly, or no feedback at all — it logs E13 and flashes the warning. The compressor may still run, but without airflow the freezer won't hold temperature properly and the fridge side can drift warm too on these side-by-side models.

What E13 looks like on a Grundig fridge freezer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Grundig fridge freezer, E13 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Machine not turning
  • Won't spin
  • Hums or buzzes but nothing moves
  • Turns one way only
  • Not cooling
  • Freezer not freezing
  • Ice building up at the back
  • Food going off in the fridge

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Ice built up around the fan blade after a defrost problem, jamming it
  • Failed freezer fan motor
  • Loose or damaged wiring between the fan and the control board
  • Food packaging or a stray bag pulled against the fan grille at the back of the freezer
  • Fault on the control board reading the fan's speed signal

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Open the freezer and check nothing — bags, packaging, an over-stuffed drawer — is pressed against the vents or grille at the back
  2. Look for obvious frost or ice building up on the rear wall of the freezer; heavy ice there is a strong clue and worth mentioning when you book the visit
  3. Make sure both doors are closing and sealing fully, as warm air getting in causes the ice build-up that jams the fan
  4. Switch off at the wall for a minute, then back on, to see whether the code returns

Which Grundig models show E13

E13 means the same thing on all 2 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
