What E12 actually means

The fridge freezer has flagged a problem with the defrost heater in the JKR compartment — the heater that periodically melts frost off that section's cooling coil.

Grundig's control board watches each compartment's defrost heater and expects to see the frost clear during a defrost cycle. On this model, E12 is the code raised when the JKR compartment's defrost heater doesn't do its job, so the board flags it and carries on running the rest of the appliance. Left alone, frost keeps building on that evaporator and cooling in that compartment gradually gets worse — you may notice food not staying as cold, or visible ice on the back wall.

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the appliance off at the wall for a minute and back on — on these Grundig boards a fault that has cleared itself is dropped after a power interruption, so if the code stays it is a live fault
Check the door on the affected compartment is closing fully and the seal is not folded or dirty, as warm air getting in makes frosting much worse
Make sure food or packaging isn't pressed against the back wall or blocking the internal air vents
If you can see a thick ice layer, empty that compartment and let it defrost fully with the door open before restarting — that at least tells you how quickly the ice comes back
