Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E03 actually means

The dishwasher hasn't managed to pump the water out in the time it expects, so it has stopped and flagged a drain problem.

The machine runs the drain pump and waits for the water to clear. If the level hasn't dropped by the time it should have, it gives up and shows this code rather than carrying on and risking an overflow. You'll usually find standing water sitting in the bottom of the tub, and the door may be locked until the fault is cleared.

What E03 looks like on a Hotpoint dishwasher

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Hotpoint dishwasher, E03 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Dishwasher door won't open
  • Door won't lock or click shut
  • Door lock light flashing
  • Door stuck shut with the load inside
  • Won't start even with the door closed
  • Dishwasher not draining
  • Water left in the tub at the end of the cycle
  • Stops mid-cycle full of water

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Blocked filter or sump at the bottom of the tub — food debris, glass chips, bits of label
  • Something jammed in the drain pump impeller, stopping it turning
  • Drain hose kinked, crushed behind the machine or blocked with grease
  • Blocked sink waste or spigot where the drain hose connects under the sink
  • Failed drain pump

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Switch off at the wall and leave it a minute, then power back up — a genuine one-off timeout will sometimes clear.
  2. Scoop or soak the standing water out of the tub with a jug and a cloth so you can see what you're dealing with.
  3. Lift out the filter assembly at the bottom, rinse it under the tap and clear anything sitting in the recess underneath it.
  4. Pull the machine forward gently and check the drain hose isn't kinked, trapped or looped tight behind it.
  5. If the hose runs into a sink waste, check the sink itself drains freely — a blocked waste will stop the dishwasher emptying.

Can I fix Hotpoint E03 myself?

There are 5 checks you can safely do yourself first.

This sometimes clears with those checks. If it comes back, it needs looking at properly.
