What F10 actually means
The dishwasher isn't getting the water hot the way it expects, and it has flagged a problem with the heating system.
Hotpoint's own service notes list F10 on their dishwashers (and the closely related Ariston models built on the same platform) as a heating element fault. The control board asks for heat during the wash or rinse stage, watches what the temperature sensor reports back, and if the water doesn't warm as it should it abandons the programme and shows the code. Typically the owner sees the cycle stop part-way through with water still in the bottom and dishes that are cold, greasy or still smeared.
What F10 looks like on a Hotpoint dishwasher
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Hotpoint dishwasher, F10 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Dishwasher not draining
- Water left in the tub at the end of the cycle
- Stops mid-cycle full of water
- Standing water in the bottom
- Not filling with water
- No water going in
- Takes for ever to fill
- Stops right at the start of the cycle
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- The heating element itself has failed and no longer warms the water
- A faulty or drifting temperature sensor (NTC) giving the board the wrong reading
- The thermostat in the heating circuit has gone open circuit
- A loose or corroded connection in the heating circuit
- Less often, a control board fault falsely reporting no heat
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then power it back on and start a short programme — this clears one-off readings.
- Clear the filter and the sump area of food debris, as poor water circulation over the heater can contribute.
- Check the water supply tap is fully open and the fill hose isn't kinked behind the machine.
