What F06 actually means
The dishwasher hasn't taken in enough water within the time it allows itself, so it has stopped and flagged a fill problem.
On Hotpoint dishwashers, F06 is a water fill timeout — the machine expects a certain amount of water to arrive within a set period at the start of the cycle, and the flow meter (the water turbine, sometimes called the impeller jug) hasn't registered it. On models without a digital display the same fault shows as a pattern of flashing lights rather than a code. It normally strands you at the beginning of the programme with little or no water in the machine.
What F06 looks like on a Hotpoint dishwasher

What usually causes it
- Tap to the dishwasher turned off or only part open
- Kinked, trapped or blocked fill hose
- Low water pressure, or a restriction in the plumbing under the sink
- Faulty water inlet valve not opening
- Blocked or damaged water turbine/flow meter, or a restricted water chamber
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Check the tap feeding the dishwasher is fully open — it only takes someone knocking it half shut behind the kickboard.
- Look at the fill hose where you can see it and make sure it isn't kinked, crushed or trapped behind the machine.
- Run the kitchen cold tap for a few seconds to confirm you actually have decent pressure and mains water hasn't been turned off.
- If the machine is plumbed into a sink waste or has an inline filter you can see, check nothing obvious is blocking it.
- Turn the dishwasher off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and restart a short programme to see if the code returns.
