What F12 actually means
The two circuit boards inside the machine — the main control board and the display/control panel — have stopped talking to each other, so the washer dryer won't start or respond properly.
Hotpoint machines run the wash and dry cycles from a main control board in the base, while the buttons and display sit on a separate board behind the fascia. F12 is logged when those two lose communication, so the machine either fails to power up properly, ignores your programme selection, or dies partway through with the display frozen. Because the control side is the fault, nothing mechanical will get it going.
What F12 looks like on a Hotpoint washer dryer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Hotpoint washer dryer, F12 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Machine door won't open
- Door won't lock or click shut
- Door lock light flashing
- Door stuck shut with the load inside
- Won't start even with the door closed
- No function at all
- Dead — nothing lights up
- Lights flashing and nothing happening

What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall, leave it a full minute, then switch back on — a genuine one-off communication glitch will sometimes clear this way
- Check the plug and socket are sound and the machine is getting power (not an extension lead or a tripped socket)
- Make sure the door is properly shut and latched before you try to select a programme, so you're not chasing two faults at once
