What F17 actually means
The machine can't confirm the door is shut and locked, so it refuses to start or continue the cycle.
Before a Hotpoint washer dryer will fill or turn the drum, the control board has to get a confirmation signal back from the door interlock — the catch and switch assembly that holds the door shut and proves it is safe to run. F17 means that confirmation never arrived. Sometimes the door genuinely isn't latched; more often the interlock itself has failed, and the board sees an open door whether it's shut or not.
What F17 looks like on a Hotpoint washer dryer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Hotpoint washer dryer, F17 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Machine door won't open

What usually causes it
- Door not pushed fully home so the catch hasn't engaged
- Failed door interlock — the commonest cause we find on these machines
- Laundry or a trapped item stopping the door closing squarely
- Damaged or burnt wiring at the interlock connector
- Worn door catch or hinge letting the door sit slightly out of line
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Open the door and close it again firmly, pressing at the handle side (around the 3 o'clock position) until you hear it catch.
- Check nothing is caught in the seal — a sleeve or a sock over the lip is enough to hold the door off its catch.
- Take out some of the load if the drum is packed tight and the washing is pushing against the door.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then back on and try the programme again.
- Check whether your machine is affected by the Hotpoint/Indesit door interlock recall using Whirlpool's recall checker — the recall was raised over a fire risk from the interlock and its wiring.
