What H20 actually means
The machine isn't getting enough water in, so it has stopped and put up a water-fill warning.
On Hotpoint washer dryers, the control board watches the water level rise after it opens the inlet valve at the start of a fill. If the level doesn't reach where it should in the time allowed, the cycle halts with H20 rather than carrying on and running the heater or drum with too little water. You'll usually see it early in a programme, or partway through when the machine tries to fill again for a rinse.
What H20 looks like on a Hotpoint washer dryer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Hotpoint washer dryer, H20 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Not filling with water
- No water going in
- Takes for ever to fill
- Stops right at the start of the cycle
- Overfilling, or won't stop filling

What usually causes it
- Water tap at the back turned off or not fully open
- Inlet hose kinked, trapped behind the machine or crushed against the wall
- Blocked filter in the inlet hose or at the valve, often silted up with grit from the mains
- Faulty water inlet valve that no longer opens
- Pressure system not reading the water level correctly, so the machine thinks it hasn't filled
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Check the cold tap feeding the machine is fully open — quarter-turn taps can look open when they're not.
- Look along the fill hose for kinks or crush points, especially where the machine has been pushed back into place.
- If you have a stopcock or nearby tap, check the mains pressure hasn't dropped or been isolated after other plumbing work.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then power it back up and restart the programme to clear the warning.
- If the hose has a screw-on filter at the tap end you can reach without tools, turn the tap off first and rinse any grit out of it.
