What F11 actually means
The machine has lost the electrical connection to its drain pump, so it stops with water still in the drum.
On Hotpoint washer dryers, F11 is raised when the control board looks for the drain pump and finds an open circuit — in other words, no electrical path to the pump at all, rather than a pump that is running and failing to shift the water. It normally shows up at the end of the wash when the machine should be emptying, and you are left with a drum full of water and no spin. It is worth knowing the difference from F05: with F05 the board can see the pump but the water is not going anywhere in the time allowed, which is very often nothing more than a blocked filter. F11 points at the pump's electrics, its wiring or its connection to the board.
What F11 looks like on a Hotpoint washer dryer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Hotpoint washer dryer, F11 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Machine not draining
- Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
- Stops mid-cycle full of water
- Standing water in the bottom
- Drum not turning
- Won't spin

What usually causes it
- Failed drain pump motor winding (open circuit)
- A loose or corroded connector at the drain pump, often after a leak underneath
- Damaged or chafed wiring between the pump and the control board
- Pump seized and burnt out, sometimes after a coin or wire has been through it
- Fault on the main control board's pump circuit
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and try a drain or spin programme — an occasional one-off reading does clear.
- Open the flap at the bottom front, have towels and a shallow tray ready, and drain the machine down through the filter. Clean out any coins, hair grips and fluff and refit the filter firmly.
- Check the drain hose behind the machine is not kinked, crushed against the wall or pushed too far down the standpipe.
- If the sink waste or standpipe the hose runs into is slow, clear that first.
