What F04 actually means
The machine hasn't managed to pump the water out within the time it allows, so it's stopped with a drumful of water.
On Hotpoint washer dryers, F04 (and the closely related F05) is a drain fault — the control board asked the drain pump to empty the tub and the water level didn't drop in the expected time. You'll usually find the cycle frozen partway through, water still sitting in the drum and the door held shut. It stops rather than carrying on because the next stage, spin or drying, is useless and potentially messy with water still inside.
What F04 looks like on a Hotpoint washer dryer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Hotpoint washer dryer, F04 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Machine door won't open
- Door won't lock or click shut
- Door lock light flashing
- Door stuck shut with the load inside
- Won't start even with the door closed

What usually causes it
- Blocked pump filter or coins, buttons and hairgrips caught in the pump
- Blocked or kinked waste hose, or a blockage where the hose joins the sink trap or standpipe
- Waste hose pushed too far down the standpipe, or the standpipe itself blocked
- A blockage in the sump hose between drum and pump
- Worn or jammed drain pump that no longer shifts water
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a couple of minutes, then switch back on — if it was a one-off timeout it may drain and clear.
- Check the waste hose behind the machine isn't kinked, crushed against the wall or trapped by the appliance.
- If the hose runs into a sink trap, check the sink itself is draining freely — a partly blocked kitchen waste will hold water back into the washer dryer.
- Clean the pump filter if your model has an accessible one behind the bottom flap, following the instruction book. Have a towel and shallow tray ready — expect water to come out.
- Run a rinse and spin once you've cleared anything and see whether it empties.
