What F08 actually means
The machine has given up on heating the water (or the air, if it happened during drying) and has stopped the cycle.
F08 on a Hotpoint washer dryer is a heating circuit fault — the control board has either failed to switch the heater on, or has found the heater relay stuck, and it halts rather than carry on. Typically the drum fills and turns but the water never gets warm, and the programme stalls partway through with F08 on the display. A washer dryer has two separate heaters, one at the bottom for the wash water and one at the top for drying, so the point in the cycle where it stopped tells the engineer which side to look at.
What F08 looks like on a Hotpoint washer dryer

What usually causes it
- Wash heating element gone open circuit (no longer heats at all)
- Heater relay on the main control board stuck or failing to switch
- Faulty NTC temperature sensor giving the board a false reading
- Loose or burnt connections on the heating circuit
- On the drying side, a tripped cut-out thermostat caused by blocked condenser ducting or a restricted fan area
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute and back on, then restart a short programme — occasionally the code was a one-off and it clears.
- Note whether it failed during the wash or during the drying part, and roughly how far in. That is the single most useful thing you can tell the engineer.
- Clean the pump filter and make sure nothing is restricting airflow around the machine, particularly if it stopped during drying.
- Try a cold wash. If it runs through cold without faulting, that points at the heating side rather than anything else, though it is not a fix.
