What E13 actually means
The machine's display panel and its main control board have stopped talking to each other.
E13 is a communication fault between the display (the part with the screen and buttons) and the main control board that actually runs the machine. Because the two aren't exchanging signals properly, the machine won't accept or carry out a programme. It's an internal electronics fault rather than anything to do with water, drainage or the drum.
What usually causes it
- A loose or corroded connector between the display and main board
- A one-off electronic glitch or power surge
- Faulty display board
- Faulty main control board
- Damaged wiring between the two boards, sometimes from damp
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall socket, leave it for a minute or two, then switch back on to see if the code clears
- Check the plug and socket are sound and the machine isn't on an extension lead or adaptor
