What E14 actually means
The machine has turned on the dryer heater but the air isn't getting any warmer, so it has stopped the drying cycle.
On a washer dryer, the control board switches the drying heater and fan on and watches the temperature. If it doesn't see a proper rise in temperature within about three minutes, it assumes the heater or its thermostat isn't working and shows E14. Washing will often still work; it's the drying side that has failed.
What usually causes it
- A tripped or failed dryer heater thermostat
- A burnt-out drying heater element
- Blocked airflow or a clogged condenser/filter making the machine overheat and cut out
- A loose or damaged connection at the heater or control board
- A faulty temperature sensor or control board
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and retry a drying cycle
- Clean the fluff/lint filter and the main pump filter if your model has them
- Check the drain hose isn't kinked and the machine isn't packed tight against a wall — it needs air around it
- Don't overload the drum; try a smaller drying load
- Make sure the room isn't very cold or badly ventilated, which can affect drying
When to call someone
This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.
Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
