What E23 actually means
The machine's display board is running the wrong software, so the control system won't let the wash start.
Montpellier lists E23 as a "wrong LCD software" fault. The main control board checks that the display/control panel board is running software that matches it, and if it doesn't recognise it the machine stops rather than running a programme. It's a mismatch inside the electronics, not a problem with water, drainage or your laundry.
What usually causes it
- Display board software doesn't match the main control board
- A replacement display or control board fitted with the wrong software version
- Software on the display board corrupted after a power cut or surge
- Faulty display/control panel board
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall socket, leave it a minute, then switch it back on — this clears codes that were logged in error
- Check the plug and socket are sound and the machine isn't on an extension lead or adaptor
