What E50 actually means
The machine's display board is running the wrong software, so the control system won't let a wash start.
E50 on these Montpellier (Vestel-built) machines means the display/LCD board has software that doesn't match the rest of the control system. The main control board checks this at start-up, and if the two don't agree it halts and shows the fault rather than running a programme it can't manage properly. It isn't a mechanical fault — nothing is blocked, leaking or worn.
What E50 looks like on a Montpellier washing machine
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Montpellier washing machine, E50 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Leaking
- Water on the floor
- Puddle underneath
- Shuts itself down and won't restart
- No function at all
- Dead — nothing lights up
- Lights flashing and nothing happening
- Programme won't start
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- Display board software doesn't match the main control board
- A replacement display or control board fitted with the wrong software version
- Corrupted software on the display board after a power cut or surge
- Faulty display board that no longer reports its software correctly
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall socket, leave it for a minute, then switch back on — this clears a one-off glitch
- Check the plug and socket are sound and the machine isn't on an extension lead or adaptor
