What E62 actually means

The control board has lost the signal telling it how fast the drum motor is turning, so it shuts the wash down rather than run the motor blind.

Montpellier's own service notes put E62 down to the motor speed signal not reaching the main board, with a failed triac (the switching device on the board that feeds the motor) given as the other cause. Without a speed reading the board cannot control the drum safely, so it halts the programme — usually as the machine tries to start turning or as it winds up to spin. The two documented models, MW6215W and MWM1214W, behave the same way and the manufacturer's fix path is identical for both.

What E62 looks like on a Montpellier washing machine

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Montpellier washing machine, E62 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Drum not turning
  • Won't spin
  • Hums or buzzes but nothing moves
  • Turns one way only
  • No function at all
  • Dead — nothing lights up
  • Lights flashing and nothing happening
  • Programme won't start

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • The speed sensor wiring on the motor has worked loose or dropped off
  • A damaged or chafed motor communication lead between motor and control board
  • A failed triac or other damage on the main control board
  • The motor's speed sensor (tacho) itself has failed

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall socket for a minute, switch back on and try a short programme — the code sometimes clears if it was a one-off dropout
  2. Take out a heavy or badly tangled load and try again with a smaller wash, as a jammed drum can bring on a motor fault code
  3. Check nothing has got wedged between the drum and the outer tub, such as a coin or an underwire, which can stall the motor

Which Montpellier models show E62

E62 means the same thing on all 2 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
