What E64 actually means

The two circuit boards that control the drum motor have stopped talking to each other, so the machine halts rather than trying to spin.

Montpellier washers of this type use a separate motor inverter board to drive the drum, and it takes its instructions from the main control board. E64 comes up when the main board sends commands and gets no sensible reply back from the inverter, so it abandons the cycle. In practice it usually shows up at the point the drum should start turning, and you're left with the programme stalled and often water still in the tub.
