The control panel and the machine's main circuit board have stopped talking to each other, so the machine won't take instructions.

E80 is a communication fault between the display board behind the buttons and the main control board that actually runs the motor, valves and pump. The two are joined by a ribbon or wiring link, and if that signal is lost the display can't confirm what the main board is doing, so the cycle is abandoned. Typically the panel lights up and shows the code but the machine won't start, or it stops mid-programme with no water or drum movement.
