What E17 actually means

The machine has lost a sensible reading from the temperature sensor on the drying side, so it will not run the dry cycle.

NTC is the small temperature sensor the control board uses to watch how hot the air is while the machine is drying. When the reading goes open circuit, short circuit or drifts outside the range the board expects, it flags E17 and abandons the drying part of the programme rather than run the heater blind. Washing usually still works; the fault shows itself when the machine reaches the drying stage, or as soon as you select a drying-only programme.

What E17 looks like on a Montpellier tumble dryer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Montpellier tumble dryer, E17 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Machine not draining
  • Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
  • Stops mid-cycle full of water
  • Standing water in the bottom
  • Not drying
  • Blowing cold air
  • Clothes still damp at the end
  • Takes hours to dry

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Faulty drying temperature sensor (NTC)
  • A loose or corroded plug on the sensor wiring
  • Damaged wiring between the sensor and the dryer control board
  • A fault on the dryer control board itself misreading the sensor

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then power it back up and try the programme again — a one-off glitch will sometimes clear
  2. Clear any lint or fluff from the filter and check the drum is not packed too tightly, so air can move freely
  3. Check the drain hose is not kinked or pushed too far down the standpipe, so the machine can empty properly before the drying stage

Which Montpellier models show E17

E17 means the same thing on all 6 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
