What E32 actually means

The dryer can't get a sensible reading from the moisture sensor inside the drum, so it can't tell when your washing is dry.

On this heat pump dryer there are two metal strips inside the drum that read how damp the laundry is by measuring across it. If the machine sees those two contacts effectively bridged — reading permanently wet — or gets no sensible signal at all, it flags E32. The fault describe this as a warning raised when the cycle finishes rather than a fault that halts the drum mid-programme, and it clears when the machine is restarted, so you'll usually notice it alongside washing that came out damper or drier than you expected.

What E32 looks like on a Montpellier tumble dryer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Montpellier tumble dryer, E32 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Machine door won't open
  • Door won't lock or click shut
  • Door lock light flashing
  • Door stuck shut with the load inside
  • Won't start even with the door closed
  • Machine not draining
  • Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
  • Stops mid-cycle full of water

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Fabric softener and detergent residue building up as a film across the sensor strips in the drum
  • Lint or a stray fibre sitting across the two metal contacts and bridging them
  • Damp laundry pressed against the sensor for the whole cycle
  • A wiring or plug connection fault at the sensor itself
  • A failed sensor or control board — the manual pairs the two together

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Find the metal sensor strips inside the drum and wipe them clean with a damp cloth, then dry them — softener residue across them is the single most common reason we see this code
  2. Take out the lint filters, rinse and dry them, and clear any fluff from the airflow openings and door seal
  3. Empty the water container
  4. Turn the dryer off at the wall for a minute, switch back on and run a short programme to see if the code returns

Which Montpellier models show E32

E32 means the same thing on this model. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.

Can I fix Montpellier E32 myself?

There are 4 checks you can safely do yourself first.

  1. Find the metal sensor strips inside the drum and wipe them clean with a damp cloth, then dry them — softener residue across them is the single most common reason we see this code.
