Montpellier E05 tumble dryer: what it means & what to check

What E05 actually means

The dryer has lost a sensible reading from the sensor that watches the temperature at the heater, so it won't run the heating.

E05 is the heater NTC (temperature sensor) fault. The control board expects a resistance from that sensor that corresponds to a believable air temperature; if the reading is off the scale — typically because the sensor's plug has come adrift or the sensor has gone short circuit — the board flags E05 and refuses to bring the heater on. The service test routine does exactly the same thing: it checks the heater NTC and reports E05 when the reading is nonsense rather than a real temperature.

What E05 looks like on a Montpellier tumble dryer

What usually causes it

The heater sensor's connector has worked loose or fallen off
The heater temperature sensor itself has failed short or open circuit
Damaged or chafed wiring between the sensor and the control board
A control board that is misreading the sensor circuit

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the dryer off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and start a cycle again — an occasional one-off reading will clear
Clean the lint filter and, on condenser models, rinse the condenser filter, so you rule out poor airflow before an engineer attends
Empty the water container and check the drum turns freely by hand with the machine switched off
