What E13 actually means
The display and control panel have stopped talking to the machine's main circuit board, so the appliance can no longer take or show instructions properly.
E13 is an LCD communication error. The main control board and the display/touch panel constantly check in with each other, and when that link goes quiet or the replies come back corrupted, the machine halts and puts E13 up rather than run blind. Typically the owner sees the display freeze, become unresponsive to button presses, or the code appear the moment power is switched on, before any cycle gets underway.
What E13 looks like on a Montpellier tumble dryer

What usually causes it
- A loose or partly dislodged ribbon/connector between the display panel and the main board
- A failed display (LCD) board
- A fault on the main control board's communication side
- Damp or condensation on the panel connections
- Electrical interference or a supply glitch causing a one-off communication dropout
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Switch the machine off at the wall socket, leave it a full minute, then switch it back on — a genuine one-off communication dropout will often clear and not return
- Check the panel is dry and has not had water or spray cleaner run into it; leave it powered off to dry if it has
- Make sure the appliance is on its own socket and not run through an extension lead or timer plug
