Montpellier E14 tumble dryer: what it means & what to check

What E14 actually means

The drying side of the machine isn't getting hot, so the control board has abandoned the dry cycle.

When a drying programme starts, the control board takes a temperature reading from the dryer sensor, switches the drying heater and fan on, and checks the reading again a few minutes later. If it hasn't climbed by at least 10°C it assumes the heating isn't working and stops with E14. E14 is a dryer heater, fan or thermostat problem, and on these washer-dryers the wash side will usually still run normally.

What E14 looks like on a Montpellier tumble dryer

What usually causes it

Blocked airflow through the machine, so the heat can't move and the thermal cut-out trips
A failed drying heating element (these models have two heaters, and only one may be dead)
A tripped or faulty dryer thermostat/thermal cut-out
Drying fan not running, or running weakly
Faulty dryer temperature sensor or a loose connection to the dryer control card

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Clean out the filter and, if your model has one, the condenser/lint trap area you can reach without tools
Check the drain hose isn't kinked or pushed too far into the standpipe — these washer-dryers use water to condense the moisture during drying, so poor drainage upsets the drying cycle
Make sure the cold water tap is fully on
Give the machine room to breathe: not shoved tight against a wall, and not in a very cold garage or outhouse — the manual is specific that drying needs sensible room conditions
Try smaller drying loads; an overpacked drum restricts airflow
Switch off at the wall for a minute, then power up and start a drying programme again to see if the code returns
