Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E33 actually means

The dryer has lost a sensible reading from one of its temperature sensors, so it shuts the programme down rather than carry on heating blind.

E33 on the MHP8SDW is an NTC (temperature sensor) fault. The control board relies on those sensors to know how hot the air in the heat pump circuit is getting; when the signal goes out of range or disappears altogether, the programme is terminated. Unlike the humidity sensor warning (E32), this one is not restorable — the cycle stops there and the code will keep coming back until the sensor or its wiring is sorted.

What E33 looks like on a Montpellier tumble dryer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Montpellier tumble dryer, E33 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Machine not draining
  • Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
  • Stops mid-cycle full of water
  • Standing water in the bottom
  • Not drying
  • Blowing cold air
  • Clothes still damp at the end
  • Takes hours to dry

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • A loose or corroded plug on the temperature sensor wiring
  • A damaged or chafed sensor lead inside the machine
  • The NTC sensor itself having failed open or short circuit
  • A fault on the control board that reads the sensor

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the dryer off at the wall for a minute, then power it back up and try a short programme — if the code returns straight away it is a genuine sensor fault, not a glitch
  2. Clean the lint filter and empty the water container while you are there, so the machine is in good order for the engineer

Which Montpellier models show E33

E33 means the same thing on this model. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
