What E16 actually means
The machine has detected that the water inside has got hotter than it should, so it has stopped the programme to protect itself and your washing.
A temperature sensor in the drum area is reporting a reading above the safe limit for the wash you selected. Either the water genuinely is overheating because the heater is not being switched off properly, or the sensor and control board are giving a false high reading. Either way the machine halts rather than carry on heating.
What usually causes it
- Faulty temperature sensor (NTC) giving a false reading
- Heating element stuck on because the control board is not switching it off
- Hot water being fed into the cold fill inlet
- Loose or corroded sensor connection
- Failed main control board
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and try a cold or 30°C programme.
- Check the machine is plumbed to the cold water supply, not the hot tap — a common fault after a kitchen refit.
- Let the machine cool for an hour before retrying, in case it is still hot from a previous long hot wash.
When to call someone
This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.
Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
