What E17 actually means
The temperature sensor for the drying side of the machine isn't giving a sensible reading, so the machine has stopped rather than risk heating without control.
E17 is a dryer NTC (temperature sensor) fault. The control board reads that sensor to manage the drying heat, and if the reading is out of range or missing altogether it shuts the cycle down. Washing may still work on some models, but the drying function won't be usable until it's sorted.
What usually causes it
- Faulty drying temperature sensor
- A loose or corroded connection at the sensor
- Damaged wiring between the sensor and the control board
- Control board fault misreading the sensor
- Damp or condensation around the sensor after heavy use
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and try a wash-only programme to see if the code clears
- Check the machine isn't running in a very hot or badly ventilated spot, and that nothing is blocking airflow around it
- Clean the filters and make sure the drum isn't overloaded before retrying
When to call someone
This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.
Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
