Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E04 actually means

The machine has taken on too much water and shut down to stop it flooding.

E04 on a New World washing machine means overflow — the control has seen the water level go above where it should be. It stops the cycle and normally runs the pump to get rid of the excess, because carrying on risks water on your floor and damage to the machine.

What usually causes it

  • Water inlet valve stuck open, letting water in when it shouldn't
  • Faulty pressure sensor giving the machine the wrong water level
  • Blocked pump or drain hose so water can't leave
  • Drain hose pushed too far down the standpipe, siphoning water back in
  • Too much detergent creating heavy foam that fools the level sensor

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and see if the code returns
  2. Turn the water tap off — if water keeps trickling into the drum, the fill valve is at fault and it needs an engineer
  3. Check the drain hose isn't kinked, trapped behind the machine or pushed too far into the standpipe
  4. Clean the pump filter at the bottom front (bowl and towel ready — there will be water)
  5. Use less detergent next cycle, especially with non-bio or in soft water areas

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
