What E08 actually means
The machine has found a fault in the part of its control board that powers the drum motor, so it has stopped rather than risk running the motor.
On New World washing machines E08 is logged as a motor triac fault. The triac is the switching component on the main control board that feeds power to the drum motor; if the board sees it stuck on, failing to switch, or reading wrong, it shuts the programme down. It is an internal electronics fault rather than anything to do with water or filters, so there is very little the owner can put right.
What usually causes it
- A failed switching component on the main control board
- A damaged or overheated control board, sometimes after a power surge
- A loose or corroded connection between the board and the drum motor
- A faulty or worn drum motor drawing too much current
- Unstable mains supply or a shared, overloaded socket
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall, leave it a minute, then switch back on and try a short programme — this clears one-off glitches.
- Make sure the machine is plugged straight into a wall socket, not an extension lead or multi-way adaptor.
- Check the drum turns freely by hand with the machine switched off and nothing jammed inside.
When to call someone
This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.
Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
