Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E13 actually means

The machine's display/control panel and its main circuit board have stopped talking to each other, so the wash won't run.

E13 is a communication fault between the display board behind the control panel and the main electronic board that actually runs the machine. Because the two can't exchange signals reliably, the machine halts rather than starting or continuing a programme. It's an internal electronics fault, not something caused by your washing or water supply.

What usually causes it

  • A loose or corroded connection between the control panel and main board
  • Damp or condensation reaching the electronics
  • A one-off electrical glitch or power surge that has confused the boards
  • A failed display board
  • A failed main control board

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall socket, leave it for a couple of minutes, then switch back on and try a short programme — this clears a one-off glitch
  2. Check the machine isn't standing in a very damp spot or has had water splashed over the control panel
  3. Make sure it's plugged directly into a wall socket rather than an extension lead

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
