What E23 actually means
The machine has found the wrong software loaded on its display board, so it won't run programmes.
E23 means the display (LCD) panel is running software that doesn't match what the main control board expects. The two boards can't work together properly, so the machine halts rather than starting a wash. It's a control/software fault, not a water, drainage or drum problem.
What E23 looks like on a New World washing machine
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a New World washing machine, E23 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Machine not draining
- Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
- Stops mid-cycle full of water
- Standing water in the bottom
- No function at all
- Dead — nothing lights up
- Lights flashing and nothing happening
- Programme won't start
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- Wrong or mismatched software on the display board
- A previous repair where a replacement board wasn't programmed for this model
- Corrupted software after a power cut or surge
- Faulty display board or main control board
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and see if the code clears
- Check the programme dial isn't left between settings and try starting a simple cycle again
