What F05 actually means
The dishwasher isn't getting enough water in, so it has halted the programme rather than run the pump dry.
During filling, the machine counts water in with a flow meter and checks the level with a pressure switch. If not enough water arrives — or the level drops from full back to empty part-way through a wash — it stops and shows F5 with the lights flashing. On these Rangemaster models the water tap is the first thing the manufacturer tells you to check, and in practice that or a restricted inlet hose accounts for most of them.
What F05 looks like on a Rangemaster dishwasher
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Rangemaster dishwasher, F05 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Dishwasher not draining
- Water left in the tub at the end of the cycle
- Stops mid-cycle full of water
- Standing water in the bottom
- Not filling with water
- No water going in
- Takes for ever to fill
- Stops right at the start of the cycle

What usually causes it
- Water tap to the dishwasher partly closed or turned off
- Inlet hose kinked, trapped behind the machine or crushed by the cabinet
- Blocked filter in the inlet hose or low mains water pressure
- A large item such as an upturned pot holding water off the level sensor, which is a one-off rather than a fault
- Faulty flow meter, pressure switch or control board
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Open the water tap fully and check water is actually running at that tap
- Look behind the machine and make sure the inlet hose isn't kinked or squashed
- Check other cold taps in the house for normal pressure — a mains issue affects the whole property
- Reload the bottom basket so nothing large is sitting upside down over the sump area
- Switch off at the wall for a minute, then power up and restart the programme
