Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What SE actually means

The dishwasher's control board has checked its own stored settings, found them corrupted, and stopped rather than run a programme it can't trust.

Every time it powers up, the control board runs a checksum on the programme data held in its memory o how long to fill, when to heat, when to drain. On this fault the sum doesn't add up, so the board refuses to continue and flags SE, usually with the indicator lights flashing together. It isn't a blockage, a leak or anything to do with the water side o the machine has lost confidence in its own memory.

What SE looks like on a Rangemaster dishwasher

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Rangemaster dishwasher, SE usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Dishwasher not draining
  • Water left in the tub at the end of the cycle
  • Stops mid-cycle full of water
  • Standing water in the bottom
  • Not filling with water
  • No water going in
  • Takes for ever to fill
  • Stops right at the start of the cycle

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Corrupted programme data in the control board's memory
  • A mains spike or sudden power cut part-way through a cycle
  • A failing main control board
  • Damp or a poor connection on the control board after a leak elsewhere in the machine

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the dishwasher off at the wall socket, leave it for a minute, then switch back on o a clean restart occasionally clears the fault
  2. If it restarts, run a short programme empty and watch whether SE returns; a one-off after a power cut often doesn't come back
  3. Check the plug and socket are not shared with an extension lead or adaptor that could be causing interruptions

Which Rangemaster models show SE

SE means the same thing on this model. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.

Can I fix Rangemaster SE myself?

  1. Turn the dishwasher off at the wall socket, leave it for a minute, then switch back on o a clean restart occasionally clears the fault.
  2. If it restarts, run a short programme empty and watch whether SE returns; a one-off after a power cut often doesn't come back.
  3. Check the plug and socket are not shared with an extension lead or adaptor that could be causing interruptions.
