What E17 actually means
The machine can no longer measure the water going into it — the flowmeter that counts the incoming water isn't giving a sensible reading, so the cycle is halted.
These Servis washer dryers meter their fill by counting pulses from a small flowmeter in the water inlet rather than relying on level alone. If the control board asks for water and the flowmeter reports nothing, or reports a figure that doesn't match what the machine expects, it flags E17 and stops rather than guess how much water is in the drum. In the listing E17 is a service code, seen during the engineer's autotest, so if it has appeared on your display the control board has decided the fault is worth showing outright.
What E17 looks like on a Servis washer dryer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Servis washer dryer, E17 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Not filling with water
- No water going in
- Takes for ever to fill
- Stops right at the start of the cycle
- No function at all
- Dead — nothing lights up
- Lights flashing and nothing happening
- Programme won't start
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- Water not reaching the flowmeter properly — tap partly closed or inlet hose kinked or crushed
- Blocked filter mesh in the inlet, restricting flow so the meter reads too low
- Scale or debris jamming the small impeller inside the flowmeter itself
- Failed flowmeter sensor or a broken connection back to the control board
- Fault on the main control board's input side (least common)
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Check the water tap behind the machine is turned fully on, not part-open.
- Look along the inlet hose for kinks, twists or anything resting on it — pull the machine out gently if you can reach safely.
- If the mains pressure in the house is low at the time (other taps sputtering), wait and retry the cycle.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then back on, and start a short programme to see if the code returns.
Which Servis models show E17
E17 means the same thing on all 4 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.

Tried the checks and it's still showing E17?
This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. Then it wants someone who can open it up.
