Sharp E03 hob: what it means & what to check

What E03 actually means

The hob has measured the incoming electricity as being outside the range it is built to run on, so it has shut the cooking zones down to protect itself.

These Sharp induction hobs monitor the mains supply while they run. If the voltage (and on some versions the frequency) drifts above the rated figures, the control board cuts the power to the zones and shows this code rather than risk damage to the induction electronics. It is a protective trip, not a sign that the hob itself has failed \u2014 which is why it often clears the moment the supply settles.

What E03 looks like on a Sharp hob

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Sharp hob, E03 usually shows up as one or more of these:

Noisy fan
Not getting cold evenly
Cuts out after a few minutes
No function at all
Dead — nothing lights up
Lights flashing and nothing happening

What usually causes it

A genuine mains supply problem \u2014 high or unstable voltage from the incoming supply
Running the hob from a generator, inverter or non-mains supply
A poor or loose connection in the cooker circuit feeding the hob
Wrong wiring configuration at installation, e.g. The hob connected across the wrong pair of conductors
A fault in the hob's own power board or its voltage sensing

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Touch the on/off control to switch the hob off, leave it a minute, then switch it back on and see whether the code returns.
Turn the hob off at the wall or the cooker isolator switch for a minute, then restore power.
Notice whether anything else in the house is behaving oddly \u2014 lights flickering or dimming, other appliances tripping. If so, the problem is with the supply, not the hob, and your electricity supplier or an electrician should look at it.
If the hob is fed from a generator or inverter, stop using it on that supply.
