Sharp E05 hob: what it means & what to check

What E05 actually means

The hob has got too hot inside its own electronics and has shut the zones down to protect itself.

Underneath the glass, an induction hob has a control board with power electronics and a cooling fan. A sensor watches the temperature in that area, and when it climbs past a safe limit the hob stops heating and shows this code rather than cook on and damage the board. It is a protective shutdown, not a broken component in itself \u2014 once everything has cooled the hob will normally run again.

What E05 looks like on a Sharp hob

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Sharp hob, E05 usually shows up as one or more of these:

Not heating up
Takes ages to get to temperature
Cuts out part way through cooking
Noisy fan
Not getting cold evenly
Cuts out after a few minutes
No function at all
Dead — nothing lights up

What usually causes it

Ventilation blocked underneath or behind the hob, often by something stored in the cupboard below
Long, heavy use of several zones on high settings, especially in a warm kitchen
The cooling fan not moving enough air, so heat builds up under the glass
A hot appliance below the hob, such as an oven on a long roast, feeding heat upwards
A faulty temperature sensor or control board reporting overheating that is not real

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the hob off at the control panel and leave it to cool completely before trying again \u2014 give it a good half hour or more.
Take everything out of the cupboard or drawer directly beneath the hob so air can move around the underside.
Check nothing is covering the hob or resting against it while it is on, including tea towels or packaging.
If the oven below has been running hot for a long time, let both cool and then try the hob on its own.
Switch off at the wall for a minute, then back on, to clear the code once the hob is cold.
