Zanussi E54 tumble dryer: what it means & what to check

What E54 actually means

The dryer has tried several times to get the drum turning and the motor hasn't responded, so it has paused the cycle.

The control board sends power to the drum motor, then checks that the motor is actually running. When it gets no response after a number of attempts, it stops rather than keep pushing power at a stalled motor. On these Electrolux-built boards (shared across Zanussi, AEG and Electrolux dryers) the E5-family codes are also shown as five green flashes followed by red flashes, so you may see that pattern rather than the code itself. The listing puts an overloaded drum, low supply voltage and a failed motor or drive system as the causes.

What usually causes it

Drum packed too full, so the motor can't turn the load
Low or unstable mains voltage at the socket
Drive belt or drum bearing seized or jammed, stopping the drum turning

Faulty drum motor, or a wiring or control board fault

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the dryer off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and restart ypa the fault is memorised and it may run if it was a one-off
Take out roughly half the load and try again ypa an overloaded drum is one of the listed causes
Listen when you press start: a hum with no drum movement usually points to the capacitor or a seized drum, and needs an engineer
