Zanussi E62 tumble dryer: what it means & what to check

What E62 actually means

The dryer has lost proper control of the power supply to its heater, so it has shut the heat off and is running a cooling cycle instead of drying.

The control board switches the heating element on and off through a relay, and it monitors whether that switching is actually happening as commanded. When it sees the heater circuit is not behaving — stuck on, not coming on, or repeatedly cut off — it drops into a forced cooling cycle to bring the drum temperature down safely. On these ENV06-board dryers the same code is also generated when the heater's self-resetting overheat thermostat has tripped several times over (the E63 condition) and the machine has given up trying to restore power to the heater.

What E62 looks like on a Zanussi tumble dryer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Zanussi tumble dryer, E62 usually shows up as one or more of these:

Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
Stops mid-cycle full of water
Standing water in the bottom

What usually causes it

Restricted airflow from a blocked lint filter or clogged condenser, causing the heater to overheat repeatedly
Failed heating element or its attached thermostat
Damaged, loose or burnt wiring or connector at the heater
Faulty relay on the control board

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Clean the lint filter thoroughly — a fine film of fabric softener residue restricts air even when the filter looks clear
On condenser models, take out and rinse the condenser unit and clear any fluff from its housing and seals
On vented models, check the hose is not kinked, crushed behind the machine or blocked, and that the outside vent is clear
Empty the water container
Turn the dryer off at the wall for a minute, then power it back up and try a short cycle to see whether the code returns
