What E82 actually means

The dryer's control board can't read the programme dial correctly when it's in the OFF position, so it won't accept a cycle.

The programme selector tells the main board which setting you've chosen, including "off". If the board reads a signal it doesn't recognise as a valid OFF position, it flags E82 and stops rather than starting a cycle it can't be sure of. It's a control-side fault — the drum, heater and sensors aren't being blamed here.

What E82 looks like on a Zanussi tumble dryer

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the dial firmly all the way round to OFF, then back to your chosen programme — a dial that has been knocked or sits between positions can trigger it
Switch off at the wall for a minute, then power back up and try again
Check the dial isn't stiff or catching as you turn it, and that nothing is jammed against it
