What E83 actually means
The dryer can't make sense of where the programme dial is set, so it won't start a cycle.
The control board reads the position of the programme selector to know which drying cycle you've chosen. E83 means the signal coming back from the selector doesn't match any valid position, so the board refuses to run rather than guess at a programme. The fault points at the wiring between the selector and the board, or the board itself.
What E83 looks like on a Zanussi tumble dryer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Zanussi tumble dryer, E83 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- No function at all
- Dead — nothing lights up
- Lights flashing and nothing happening
- Programme won't start
- Machine tripping the electrics
- E83 flashing on the display
- Beeping and showing E83
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- Programme dial left between two settings rather than clicked into one
- A loose or damaged connection between the selector and the control board
- A worn or failed selector switch behind the dial
- A faulty main control board misreading the selector
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the dial firmly to a definite programme position — not halfway between two — and try starting again
- Switch the dryer off at the wall for a minute, then back on; a one-off misread will sometimes clear
- Check the dial hasn't been knocked loose or is spinning freely without engaging
