Beko E04 hob: what it means & what to check

What E04 actually means

The hob's control board is reading a temperature sensor that never changes, so it has shut the affected cooking zone down rather than heat blind.

Under each induction zone there's a small temperature sensor (an NTC) sitting against the coil, and the board watches it constantly to keep the coil and the glass within safe limits. E04 is raised when that sensor's reading is stuck at a fixed value instead of rising and falling with the pan — as far as the board is concerned it has lost its only means of knowing how hot the coil is getting, so it stops the zone. It shows up on the display in place of the usual power level and normally the zone will not respond to the touch controls at all.

What E04 looks like on a Beko hob

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Beko hob, E04 usually shows up as one or more of these:

Not heating up
Takes ages to get to temperature
Cuts out part way through cooking
Noisy fan
Not getting cold evenly
Cuts out after a few minutes
No function at all

What usually causes it

A loose or partly unseated plug on the coil temperature sensor
Damaged or chafed wiring between the sensor and the control board
A failed coil NTC sensor itself, reading one fixed value
A fault on the induction control board that misreads the sensor

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the hob off at the wall or at the isolator switch, leave it a minute, then switch back on — an occasional one-off reading will clear
Note whether the code returns straight away or only when one particular zone is used, and which zone; that saves the engineer time
