Blomberg E05 washing machine: what it means & what to check

What E05 actually means

The machine cannot get the water out — the drain pump either isn't turning or isn't being driven by the control board.

Blomberg's control board watches the drain pump and expects the water level to drop when it calls for draining. If the pump is blocked, its rotor is jammed, or the board's pump-driving circuit has failed, the cycle stops with water still in the drum. Typically you'll see the programme running far longer than it should, no drainage, and no spin at the end.

What E05 looks like on a Blomberg washing machine

What usually causes it

Blocked pump filter or pump impeller — coins, hair grips, buttons or fluff
Drain hose kinked, pushed too far into the standpipe or blocked with sludge
Pump rotor seized so it cannot turn
Blockage in the sump hose between drum and pump
Failure of the pump-drive circuit on the control board

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then restart a spin/drain programme — it occasionally clears a one-off
Empty the pump filter behind the flap at the bottom front (have a shallow tray and towels ready — expect a fair amount of water) and clear anything caught in it
Check the drain hose isn't kinked, trapped behind the machine or crushed against the wall
Make sure the hose end isn't pushed more than a few inches into the standpipe, which can cause siphoning and drainage problems
Feel whether the hose is heavy and full of standing water, which points to a blockage further along
