What E22 actually means

The machine has decided something is wrong with the water heating circuit and has stopped rather than carry on with a wash it cannot heat.

On Candy washing machines E22 is a water heating fault. The control board (Candy call it the "Cuore" power card) sends power to the heating element and watches for the water temperature to respond; when that doesn't happen as expected, or the heating circuit reads as faulty, it halts the cycle and shows the code. The usual culprits are the heater element itself, its wiring and connections, or the power card that switches it.

What E22 looks like on a Candy washing machine

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Candy washing machine, E22 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Not heating the water
  • Washing coming out cold
  • Cycle takes far longer than it should
  • No function at all
  • Dead — nothing lights up
  • Lights flashing and nothing happening
  • Programme won't start
  • Machine tripping the electrics

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Failed heating element in the bottom of the drum
  • Corroded, loose or burnt connections at the heater terminals
  • Faulty heater control on the Cuore power card
  • Damaged wiring between the board and the element
  • Temperature sensor giving the board a reading it doesn't accept

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and restart a short programme — an occasional one-off reading will clear
  2. Try a cold wash: if that runs through and only heated programmes fail, that points firmly at the heating circuit and is useful information for the engineer
  3. Check the machine isn't tripping your fuseboard or RCD when it reaches the heating part of the cycle — if it is, stop using it and leave it switched off
