ElectriQ E64 tumble dryer: what it means & what to check

What E64 actually means

The main control board has lost contact with the board that drives the motor, so the machine won't run the drum.

On these integrated washer-dryers the motor is a brushless (BLDC) type with its own inverter board, and the main PCB has to talk to it before the drum will turn. E64 is raised when the main board sends a command and gets no reply from the inverter board within 20 seconds. The machine tries to recover on its own — cutting power to the inverter for two minutes to reset it and then re-sending the command, up to seven times — and only alarms once every attempt has failed. That is why the fault often appears a minute or two after you press start rather than instantly.

What usually causes it

A failed motor inverter board (the most common outcome in practice)
A loose, corroded or damp connector on the communication lead between the two boards
A damaged or chafed wiring loom running to the motor board
A fault on the main control board itself
Water ingress or a moisture-affected board after a leak

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Switch the machine off at the wall socket, leave it for a couple of minutes, then power up and start a cycle again — this mirrors the reset the machine attempts itself and will clear a one-off communication glitch
If the drum is full of water, run a drain or spin-only programme if it will accept one, so the load isn't left sitting wet
Note whether the code appears on every programme or only when the drum should start spinning — it saves time when an engineer attends
