What E22 actually means
The dryer's control board can no longer tell whether the water pump is running, so it has stopped the programme.
On these condenser dryers a pump moves the condensed water up into the collection canister (the water tank in the fascia). The board has a monitoring circuit that watches the switching device feeding that pump, and it has reported a fault in that sensing circuit rather than in the pump itself. Because the machine can't confirm what the pump is doing, it abandons the cycle and shuts down.
What usually causes it
- Fault on the main electronic control board (the usual finding on E22)
- Damaged or corroded wiring between the board and the pump
- Water ingress or damp around the pump area affecting the board's connections
- A failing pump or float switch dragging the circuit out of range
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Empty the water container and refit it properly.
- Clean the fluff filter in the door and the condenser filter if your model has an accessible one, so water isn't backing up.
- If the dryer drains to a waste pipe, check the hose isn't kinked or trapped behind the machine.
- Switch off at the wall for a minute, then power up and start a short programme to see if the code returns.
When to call someone
This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.
Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
