What E49 actually means
The machine is getting two conflicting signals about whether the door is shut and locked, so it pauses mid-cycle with the door still held shut.
There are two separate checks on the door: one on the mains line side of the interlock and one reporting the lock's status. During a cycle both must read closed. If they disagree for as little as three seconds, the control board can no longer be sure the door is safely locked, so it pauses the programme and keeps the door locked rather than risk opening it with water in the drum.
What usually causes it
- A worn or failing door interlock, which is what it usually turns out to be
- Loose or corroded connections at the door lock
- Door not fully pulled shut, or a distorted catch putting the lock under strain
- Fault on the main control board misreading the door signals
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then back on and restart — a one-off glitch can clear
- Push the door firmly closed until you hear it latch, and check nothing (a stray sock, the seal folded over) is stopping it seating properly
- Check the door isn't dropped or catching on the frame as it closes
